Laura E. Bergus is a partner and general practice attorney at Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus, L.L.P. in Iowa City. Laura's practice focuses on civil litigation, contracts and contract disputes, business formation, family law, estate planning, probate, and all types of appeals within the state of Iowa. She is also a mediator and collaborative practitioner in family law matters.
Laura is an Iowa City native. She received a B.A. from the University of Iowa with special honors and highest distinction and a J.D. with highest distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law. She is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and Order of the Coif.
Before attending law school, Laura was telecommunications director for the City of North Liberty, Iowa. She also worked during law school on communications and technology issues for a variety of legal organizations.
Laura volunteers her time in the community. She was co-founder of the North Bend Historical Society, served on the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce Steering Committee and the North Liberty Development Group, chaired North Liberty's Blues & BBQ committee and the Johnson County Livable Communities Initiative Website Action Team, volunteered with Iowa Legal Aid, and was a member of the Johnson County Community Network board of directors. She currently serves on the Iowa City Regional Advisory Council for Iowa Legal Aid, the Iowa City Telecommunications Commission, the board of directors for FilmScene, and is an officer of the Grant Wood Elementary Parent Teacher Organization. She received the Corridor Business Journal's 40 Under 40 award in 2015.
Laura is licensed to practice in state courts in Iowa. She is a member of the Dean Mason Ladd Inn of Court, the Iowa Organization of Women Attorneys, Collaborative Lawyers of Eastern Iowa, and the Johnson County and Iowa Bar Associations. Laura has been recognized by the Iowa Supreme Court for her pro bono service each year 2012-2015.
Laura's notable cases include: Ziskovsky v. Ziskovsky, 843 N.W.2d 478, No. 13-0360, 2014 WL 69620 (Iowa Ct. App. Jan. 9, 2014); Oehl v. Amana Colonies Land Use District Board of Trustees, 847 N.W.2d 237, No. 13-0328, 2014 WL 1234216 (Iowa Ct. App. Mar. 26, 2014).
